Ghost Eggs: A Shell-Less Egg Science Activity

A simple Halloween science activity: watch vinegar dissolve an eggshell while the delicate membrane stays intact. Food coloring adds a tint, not a glow. Allow about two days for the shell to dissolve.

Six-step shell-less egg experiment guide with refrigeration and adult supervision

Supplies

Raw eggs, white vinegar, a clear container with a lid, a large spoon, and optional food coloring.

Step by step

  1. Place eggs in a container without touching. Cover completely with white vinegar.
  2. Cover and refrigerate for 24 hours. Observe the bubbles forming on the shells.
  3. Lift eggs gently with a spoon, replace the vinegar, and refrigerate for another 24 hours.
  4. When the shells have dissolved, gently rinse the eggs. Discard any with a broken membrane.
  5. Observe the translucent membrane. Optionally tint an egg in colored water in the refrigerator. Keep refrigerated until ready to explore.
  6. Discard the eggs after the activity. Wash hands, tools, and surfaces thoroughly.

Adult supervision is required. These are raw eggs: do not eat them, and handle gently over a bowl. Vinegar breaks down the shell while leaving its membrane. Science activity reference: Exploratorium.
