Supplies

Heavy mixed-media paper, acrylic paints in sage, lilac, blush, cream and your chosen skin tone, brushes, pencil, tissue paper, matte collage medium and a fine black pen.

Six simple steps

1. Paint the backdrop. Brush on pale sage, lilac and cream. Leave light spaces and let dry.

2. Sketch simple shapes. Draw an oval head, small bodice, wide tutu and curved arms. Keep the supporting leg straight and the bent knee to the viewer’s right.

3. Add the dancer. Paint the skin, dark bun and blush bodice; let dry.

4. Build the tutu. Layer pale lilac and white strokes from waist to hem.

5. Add paper petals. Glue small torn tissue shapes along the hem using matte medium. Let everything dry fully.

6. Finish with loose ink. Test the pen on dry paint first, then add broken outlines and a few folds.

Keep the marks loose; perfect proportions are optional. Choose the colors and details that make your dancer your own.
