A little color. A quiet moment. This soft pink coneflower is a simple watercolor study in flowing petals, transparent layers and a textured center.

What you need
Watercolor paper, pink or red watercolor, yellow or orange, brown, green, pale turquoise, a round brush, pencil, water and paper towel.
Paint along
1. Sketch the flower. Draw a rounded center, several drooping petals and a short stem. Keep the pencil light.
2. Add a pale wash. Paint a watery turquoise background around the flower, leaving the petal shapes light. Let it dry.
3. Shape the petals. Use diluted pink for broad, curved strokes. Leave pale gaps and soft edges so the petals feel airy.
4. Layer deeper pink. Add stronger color near the center and selected folds. Let some petals stay lighter to create depth.
5. Paint the center and stem. Add an orange-brown center and a green stem. Once dry, use small dark brown marks around the center for texture.
6. Finish selectively. Add a few darker pink accents and let the painting dry. Stop while the brushwork still feels loose.
