Mommy & Me Art Breaks

Simple art projects to slow down, create, and connect with your little one. Find beginner-friendly tutorials, printable guides, and gentle mindfulness prompts to enjoy together—one brushstroke at a time. Moms, dads, grandparents, and caregivers are welcome.

First art break: Watercolor Holiday Ornaments

Stamp round and oval ornaments with a cardboard roll, then fill them with soft watercolor. Paint separate cards side by side or share one larger sheet. Allow about 25 minutes, plus drying time.

Supplies and written painting steps

Supplies: Cardboard roll, 300 gsm watercolor paper, pink/lavender/blue watercolor paints, brush, water, mixing plate, white gel pen, silver pen, and optional glitter glue.

1. Stamp circles

Brush concentrated purple watercolor onto the cardboard roll’s rim. Press straight down onto dry paper and lift. Test on scrap paper first.

2. Shape the ovals

Gently squeeze the roll into an oval and stamp again. Make 4–6 ornaments at different heights, leaving room for strings.

3. Add watercolor

Lightly wet inside each shape, leaving a small gap at the outline. Drop in pink, lavender and blue. Let the colors mingle.

4. Add depth

While damp, deepen one side and the bottom with purple or blue. Keep the center light. Let dry completely.

5. Add details

Draw silver caps and hanging strings. Add curved white highlights. Optional: paint tiny beads beneath the ornaments.

6. Finish with sparkle

Dot a little glitter glue onto the dry painting, let dry, then add a holiday greeting. Display it or make a card.

Make it a Mommy & Me moment

Little artist: Choose colors, stamp shapes, and drop in paint. Grown-up: Help hold the paper, manage water, and add fine details if wanted. Let your child’s colors and shapes be their own. Younger children can use age-appropriate washable paint; the blending effect may differ.

For little ones, skip loose glitter and tiny embellishments; use painted dots for sparkle. Keep pens and glitter glue with the grown-up and supervise throughout.

Pause together: “Let’s take one slow breath and watch our colors mix.” Ask, “What do you notice when the colors meet?”

One brushstroke at a time.

Make holiday gifts ahead

Start teacher gifts several weeks before winter break. Begin clay keepsakes first to allow drying time, then make frames, little books and cards. Check your school’s last day for delivering gifts.
